barbara's story
Bárbara Olivieri was in sixth grade when a teacher announced that Houston was getting a women's professional soccer team. She immediately told her parents they had to go. At the Dash's first exhibition match in 2014, Olivieri saw women playing professionally in the same stadium where she had watched the Dynamo, and returned soon afterward as a ball girl. The moment gave a young player from nearby Katy something that had not always existed for girls growing up in the city: a professional future she could see from the sideline. Less than a decade later, she would walk onto that same field wearing a Dash uniform.
Olivieri left Texas A&M after two seasons because soccer had always been her first priority, choosing a professional opportunity with Monterrey rather than transferring to another college. She expected growing up in a Venezuelan family and speaking Spanish to make the move to Mexico relatively easy. Instead, professional soccer and life away from home brought a culture shock she had not anticipated. She stayed, continued her college coursework online and learned how to navigate a career in which comfort could no longer be the measure of whether she was moving in the right direction.
Olivieri's identity has always stretched across borders. Born and raised in Katy, Texas, she grew up in a household where her Venezuelan parents spoke Spanish with her and raised her deliberately within Venezuelan traditions, even as she became, unmistakably, a product of Houston soccer. Now joining Boston Legacy after another championship-winning stop in Mexico, Olivieri brings the perspective of someone who has already learned that belonging does not have to mean remaining in one place. It can mean carrying every place that shaped you into the next one. Off the field, she unwinds with golf and pickleball, both more about the company than the competition, and stays loyal to The Vampire Diaries as her show of choice.
