sophia's story
Sophia Wilson became the NWSL's Most Valuable Player at twenty-one, the youngest to win the award, before most fans outside Portland had learned to spell her name. By then she'd already been fast-tracked past the usual apprenticeship: signed as a National team-caliber teenager, thrown into a Thorns attack that had no patience for a slow build, and asked to be the finisher from day one. She was.
She plays with a directness that makes the position look simpler than it is, closing distance and shooting angles before a defender has finished reacting to the first touch. Alongside Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, she became part of a USWNT forward line nicknamed Triple Espresso, three attackers young enough to still be discovering their ceilings and dangerous enough that opposing coaches built entire game plans around slowing just one of them down. In 2024, that generation delivered: Wilson won Olympic gold in Paris, the tournament that had eluded the USWNT the cycle before.
She and her family welcomed a daughter, Gigi, in 2025, and she has come back to the USWNT posthaste after her maternity leave. Wilson has continued playing at the level that made her a national name in the first place, carrying motherhood and a starting role for both club and country at once.
