sam's story
Sam Mewis announced her retirement from soccer at twenty-nine, not with a highlight reel but with a series of long, unguarded posts about depression, about crying in physical therapy sessions that led nowhere, about a body that had been rebuilt through multiple knee surgeries and still would not hold. She had won a World Cup and an Olympic medal by then, but the announcement made clear that none of it had made the previous two years survivable on its own.
She built her game around size and timing rather than speed, a midfielder who scored more with her head than most forwards manage with their feet, arriving late into the box on set pieces that opponents had scouted and still could not stop. At North Carolina she won a national championship before turning professional, and she carried that same physical presence into the national team, where she became a fixture of the midfield that won the 2019 World Cup and took bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. The knee injuries that would eventually end her career began showing up not long after, a slow accumulation of setbacks that no single surgery ever fully resolved.
She is the younger sister of Kristie Mewis, also a USWNT player, and the two spent stretches of their careers on the same field and the same roster, an uncommon overlap in a sport that rarely keeps siblings together this long. Since retiring, Sam has continued speaking publicly about the mental health toll of injury and uncertainty, treating the subject as something worth naming plainly rather than something to push through in silence. She left the sport still telling the truth about what it had cost her.
