my story

There is a particular kind of athlete who becomes the face of a sport not just because of what they do on the field but because of how completely they seem to inhabit the argument for why the sport deserves more. For the better part of two decades, Hillary Knight has been the most recognizable name in a game that has had to fight for every rink, every roster spot, and every contract, and she has given everything she has to two things simultaneously: being the best player on the ice and making sure the sport she loved was being built to last.

She is one of the most decorated players in the history of U.S. women's hockey, with multiple Olympic medals including the gold the program waited twenty years to reclaim in 2018, and a string of World Championship titles that confirmed her excellence across different eras of the game. She scores with power and positions with intelligence, a combination that made her dangerous at every level she played. But the full measure of what Knight contributed cannot be taken from stats alone. She was a central figure in the formation of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association in 2019, among the most visible faces of a collective decision to step away from the existing professional league and demand something built to a real standard. The players built it. The PWHL launched in 2024, and Knight was there.

Knight has been as deliberate off the ice as she is on it. She lives openly with her partner, speed skater and Olympic medalist Brittany Bowe, and has used her platform with the same intention she brings to everything else, understanding that who sees you matters as much as what you do. When the history of American women's hockey is written, Knight's name will be at the top of the page.
